Almost none of that is right — and the single fact that breaks the whole picture is this: your body makes cholesterol on purpose, every day, in nearly every cell, because it cannot function without it.
Nothing alive wastes energy manufacturing something that harms it. That your body builds cholesterol constantly, and guards how much it has with such care, is the first clue we've been thinking about it backwards. So let's look at what it actually does.
Cholesterol isn't a waste product or an intruder. It's one of the fundamental building materials of being alive. Here's some of what it's doing in you right now — tap each one.
Cell walls; a whole family of hormones, from your sex hormones to the one that sets your blood pressure; vitamin D; digestion; the brain itself. This is not a villain that slipped into your bloodstream. It's one of the most essential molecules your body possesses — so essential that your body refuses to leave the supply to chance.
Here's the fact that quietly upends decades of dietary advice: most of the cholesterol in your blood was not eaten. It was made — by your own liver. And it isn't made blindly: your body runs a thermostat. Eat more cholesterol, your liver makes less. Eat less, it makes more. For most people, the level stays remarkably steady almost regardless of what's on the plate.
This is why the old advice quietly collapsed. For decades people were warned off eggs and told to keep cholesterol under a strict daily limit. Then, in 2015, the official dietary guidelines dropped that limit altogether — the reviewing scientists concluded cholesterol was "not a nutrient of concern for overconsumption." Not because it stopped mattering, but because the body makes and controls so much of its own that what you eat moves the needle far less than everyone assumed.
If you've had a cholesterol test, you've met these two: LDL the "bad," HDL the "good." One of the most repeated ideas in all of health — and a cartoon that hides something more interesting.
Start with a problem your body must solve. Cholesterol is a fat, and fat doesn't dissolve in water — and your blood is mostly water. So it can't float around loose. Your body needs delivery vehicles.
